First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told parliament this afternoon that cases of the virus in Scotland are “at or near to the peak” and she confirmed the lifting of restrictions on large outdoor events in Scotland from Monday 17 January. The current rules around social distancing, table service and mask wearing in pubs and restaurants remain in place as do the restrictions to indoor events.

Commenting on the First Minister’s statement Adrian Watson, Chief Executive said “Whilst we welcome the relaxation on restrictions for large outside events, the decision not to extend this to indoor events and wider hospitality now will have an increasing detrimental effect on many of our businesses. Consideration must be given to further economic support both in the here and now and of course in the longer term through measures such as the setting of business rates.

“Moreover, the continued call for home working also presents a real challenge for the longer-term health of our city centres and government now needs to consider a coherent plan on the return to the office and how and when we achieve this.”
