Mirror, mural on the wall ... who’s the finest of them all?
The answer is Craig Munro, who has scooped a £100 Aberdeen Gift Card after taking part in Aberdeen Inspired’s Mirror Mural challenge asking people to recreate real life versions of their favourite Nuart Aberdeen work.
Craig, a retail assistant, freelance illustrator and graphic designer, won the prize after creating a superb action figure, based on the Supper Scurry mural, the iconic Nuart artwork on the former Country Ways building at Holburn Street.
His image of the full-size mural alongside his own take on the scurry perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the challenge. It was a concept dreamed up and executed brilliantly by three Robert Gordon University students on placement with Aberdeen Inspired, Lisa Bruce, Keira O’Brien and Luke Chalmers.

Craig, who lives in the city centre, said he was delighted to win the £100 Aberdeen Gift Card.
He said: “I picked Super Scurry because it’s one of my favourite murals that’s come from Nuart Aberdeen and I was pretty confident I could make a passable action figure and not have to be in the photo myself (well...other than my hand).”
“I made my mini Scurry out of Fimo, I used balled up tinfoil as a core to use up less material and also keep it lighter weight for going in the box.
“The legs have wire running through them to keep them thin and straight (Fimo is pretty floppy once you work it a bit). Once it was baked and cooled I painted it with a combination of Posca markers and acrylic paint.”

Craig said his project took about five or so hours of work, spread over four days and he was delighted to “get my hands dirty” after working digitally almost exclusively for a while.
And he is a huge fan of Nuart Aberdeen.
“Nuart is always a highlight, it’s really great seeing folk in Aberdeen get excited for art, and I especially love the lead up when you can catch a few of the murals in the early stages,” Craig said.
“My partner and I were busy at the weekend of the Nuart Aberdeen festival, so we haven’t been out to see the new murals, but we’ve got our maps and will have a wee adventure checking out the new ones soon.”
Just like Craig, you can also get a Nuart Aberdeen map and set off on your own voyage of discovery on a route of your choosing. To find out more visit the Aberdeen Inspired website.
