Nuart Aberdeen aims to reconnect people and place when the festival returns in June
Earlier this month we announced that the city and its walls will once again act as the canvas to a host of world class street artists as part Nuart Aberdeen 2022 which will return to the city from Thursday 9 until Sunday 12 June.
Artists form around the world have transformed the streetscape of the Granite City over the course of four years making the city centre into an outdoor public gallery featuring everything from golfers to leopards.
The festival weekend will feature a full festival line up of street art productions, events, community workshops, creative spaces, talks, conference programme, and tours and is shaping up to be the most exciting festival to date.
Commenting on the return of the festival, Adrian Watson, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired said “Nuart Aberdeen is a festival unlike any other seen in the city, it has a mass appeal and it inspires people of all ages to enjoy art in their own way at their own pace.
“We are delighted to be bringing the festival back to the city centre this year and locals and visitors can expect to see work from some of the finest internationally acclaimed street artists.
“The importance of events like Nuart Aberdeen to the recovery of the city centre cannot be underestimated. City centre businesses from hotels to restaurants and shops will enjoy a much needed boost to the local economy as a direct result of Nuart Aberdeen. We not only expect to welcome thousands of visitors over the course of the festival weekend, but indeed year-round people will flock to the city to take in the art, go on a public walking tour and enjoy all the city centre has to offer.
“Nuart Aberdeen has firmly placed Aberdeen on the global stage as a destination of choice for street art enthusiasts. This coupled with our developing food scene, café culture, reopening of Union Terrace gardens, superb theatres, clubs and pubs and other attractions all help to position Aberdeen as a great place to live, work and visit.”
Businesses are being encouraged to get set for an influx of visitors over the festival weekend and property owners are also being encouraged to put forward potential walls for artists to make their own during the festival.
Project manager Ross Grant said “We are still on the hunt for a few big external city centre walls in good condition, visible to the public and not granite or listed.”
To submit a wall, please send an email to callforwalls@aberdeeninspired.com with the following information: a photo of the wall, address, and approximate dimensions of the wall.
Brollies above the Business District
Shiprow and Bon Accord Terrace, in the city’s business improvement district, have been confirmed as the locations that will play host to two quirky colourful art installations aimed at raising awareness and understanding of ADHD and autism.
We are bringing the uplifting temporary installation to the city centre in mid-June, working in partnership with the ADHD Foundation as part of a three-year programme. The iconic display will feature a canopy of hundreds of vibrant, colourful umbrellas suspended across the city street.
Last week we revealed Shiprow as the first site and today we can confirm that the planning application for a second installation in the West End on Bon Accord Terrace has been submitted.
Commenting on the locations for the installations, Adrian Watson, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Inspired said “We are thrilled to reveal Shiprow and Bon Accord Terrace as the locations for our upcoming Umbrella Project and we know how excited the surrounding businesses are to have such an iconic project on their doorstep.
“We are not only proud to bring such an uplifting project to the city for the first time but also to be playing such an important part in flipping the narrative of neurodiverse individuals, and instead, recognise the strengths and ability of those with cognitive differences.”
“The displays will encourage people from all walks of life to come into the city centre, enjoy all it has to offer, take part in the celebrations and embrace the joy the multi coloured installations.”
Bill Barclay, Partner at Raeburn Christie Clark & Wallace LLP said: “I am delighted that the Umbrella Project is likely to be heading to Bon Accord Terrace. The vibrant colours and uplifting imagery are exactly the sort of eye-catching installation that will encourage footfall into the West End.
“I hope the display will also stimulate conversation as to the reason for the project which, in turn will, of course lead them to the important work being carried out by the ADHD Foundation. My hope is that the project attracts the public to the West End, whilst highlighting the important work of the Foundation.”
Harbour Energy is the principal sponsor of the project and Aberdeen Inspired were also awarded a grant of £12,500 towards the project – roughly the cost of one installation – through the Scottish Government’s Scotland Loves Local Fund II which aims to encourage people to think local first and support businesses and enterprises in their community.
The project will remain in place until late August 2022.

Scottish Cities could follow in Aberdeen’s ENTEM footsteps
Earlier this week, our Evening and Night Time Economy Manager Ewan McLean was interviewed by BBC Good Morning Scotland to discuss calls from the Scottish Beer & Pub association for Edinburgh and Glasgow to follow Aberdeen in appointing an Evening and Night-time economy manager.
He highlighted the benefits of the collaborative approach and praised the Purple Flag accreditation scheme as a vehicle to drive partnership work for excellence in the night-time economy.
With the hospitality industry facing unprecedented financial pressures and consumer confidence still low this is the time the industry needs an advocate to highlight the social and cultural benefits a vibrant city after dark brings.
