The Neurodiversity in the Workplace conference
The conference was aimed at both private and public sector businesses, held on 30 May 2023 at Aberdeen Douglas Hotel and was organised by Aberdeen Inspired. Over a 100 local professionals gathered to improve their knowledge and understanding of Neurodiversity and the role we can all play in creating more inclusive workplaces.
Attendees received invaluable advice our inspirational and expert speakers which included:
- Charlotte Valeur, Chair of Institute Of Neurodiversity ION - Discussing the importance of neurodiverse networks and provided tips for companies on how to create inclusive workplaces.
- Angela Pretner Smith, Managing Director and Founder of This is Milk - Discussed the need to offer employees a psychologically safe work environment, discussing her own real life experiences and offering best practices.
- Professor Amanda Kirby, Founder and CEO of Do-IT Solutions - Discussed the neurodiversity screening and web-based support tools in the workplace.
- Mavis Anagboso, Global Head of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Harbour Energy - Discussed how the company integrated strategies for supporting staff who are neurodiverse through best practices and improved diversity and inclusion practices in the workplace.
- Comedian, Joe Wells - Discussed the benefits of employing a neurodivergent workforce and creating a workplace culture that supports employees to reach their full potential. Joe provided an insight into his own lived experience of neurodiversity and how this has contributed to his success.

Leading a Neurodiverse Classroom: Practical Strategies for Teachers (Session 1)
Learn how to support students with diverse needs, understand different learning styles, and foster inclusive classrooms.
Topics covered:
- What is neurodiversity?
- Leading a neurodiverse classroom.
- Brief strength based explanation of..... dyslexia ( 1 in 10 learners), Dyspraxia (1 in 20), Autism (1 in 67) ADHD ( 1 in 20), Dyscalculia (1 in 20) Tourette's & Tics 1 in 100 in the general population but significantly higher as a co-occurring condition with ADHD and Autism.
- Classroom strategies to improve teaching and learning to raise academic attainment for the 1 in 5 pupils who will be ‘ND'
- Cognitive profiling to identify learners of concern and strategies to support that child's unique cognitive profile.
- Developing Executive Functioning skills.
Supporting Your Neurodiverse Child: Strategies for Parents and Carers (Session 2)
Learn how to support students with diverse needs, understand different learning styles, and foster inclusive classrooms.

- How do I understand and support my child's neurodiversity?
- A strength-based explanation of dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, autism, dyscalculia and Tourette’s
- Parenting strategies to create a neurodiverse friendly home.
- Collaborating with Education to support my child's well being and success at school.
