Meet John Dempster, Manager of Lakeland on 154 Union Street which has been a favourite with city and shire shoppers since it opened its Aberdeen store in 1996. The kitchenware company, which specialises in cooking, baking, cleaning and laundry products, was established in the early 1960s.

Still privately owned, with aspirations to become “the world’s most loved homewares brand, Lakeland’s reputation and longevity come from the owners’ long-standing belief that service is of the utmost importance.

A multichannel company, Lakeland offers ‘click & collect’ and home delivery. The Aberdeen store also has a collection point for customers with vehicles at the rear of the building.

What do you like about being based on Union Street?

Having been in this location for over quarter of a century we have become something of a landmark with locals, we form part of a stunning building that is shortly to undergo major renovation - so in the not too distant future we will look even more amazing!

Union Street is the heart of the City and we have seen improving footfall post covid lockdowns. We have a good variety of businesses nearby, cafés, pubs, other retailers and the Music Hall. There are several bus stops close by and Golden Square to the rear of us offers a convenient short stay carpark within easy walking distance.

What's your favourite thing about Aberdeen?

The stoic nature of Aberdonians!

What benefits do you believe you get from being a levy payer?

Seeing the initiatives that Aberdeen Inspired promotes, being able to voice an opinion, being kept informed about what is happening elsewhere in the City, as well as meeting other levy payers and getting support with things like the Aberdeen Gift Card.

What one thing do you think would improve Union Street?

Although improving, it would be great to see full occupancy of empty buildings with a diverse mix of sectors - social, retail, hospitality, housing, sports etc.

And finally . . .

It’s great to hear that a large employer like Shell has moved their main offices to Union Street. Anything that brings people to the area can only be a good thing for businesses on the Granite Mile.
