World premiere of stunning north-east version of Dracula set for His Majesty’s Theatre
Aberdeen theatre fans have a chance to sink their teeth into the world premiere of a stunning new take on Dracula – co-produced here in the Granite City by Aberdeen Performing Arts.
The opening performance of Dracula: Mina’s Reckoning will be at His Majesty’s Theatre on Thursday, September 7 ahead of a tour that will take in major Scottish theatres before travelling to venues south of the border.
This new version, co-produced by APA and the National Theatre of Scotland, sees the story transported to Aberdeenshire in a nod to the wild beauty of the north-east - and especially Slains Castle - which inspired Bram Stoker when he was writing his iconic gothic horror.
Penned by the north-east’s own Morna Pearson, Dracula: Mina’s Reckoning is set in an asylum in Aberdeenshire in 1897 (the year Stoker’s novel was published).
It focuses on Mina as she seeks refuge to escape the horrors she has faced and retells her encounters with the terrifying beast, Dracula.
Morna said: She said: “I was excited to adapt Dracula and place it in the familiar setting of the north-east, the place where my writing feels at home. I wanted to examine themes of our times – fear, trauma, and powerlessness – in ways the horror genre lends itself to.”
The new production will star Aberdeen actress Danielle Jam, leading an all-female and non-binary cast.
Preview performances are now running at HMT ahead of the official world premiere on Thursday.
