They’re back! The iconic Aberdeen letters are returning to take pride of place in Union Terrace Gardens.
Aberdeen Inspired’s hugely-popular illuminated sign took a temporary break from the gardens to allow the Spectra Festival of Light to be held, but work to reinstall them in their prime location started today. (Tuesday, 2nd April).
Aberdeen Inspired chief executive Adrian Watson said he was delighted by the return of the Hollywood-style display, with the finishing touches taking place in the next day or so.
“The Aberdeen letters are now synonymous with the Granite City, wherever they go, be it the Castlegate or the Port of Aberdeen’s new South Harbour where they welcomed the Princess Royal on the official opening day,” said Adrian.
“But it is at Union Terrace Gardens where the letters seemed to really capture the public imagination and launch a thousand selfies - especially with that magnificent backdrop of His Majesty’s Theatre and the William Wallace statue.
“I know people will share my delight at seeing them back in that special and unique spot, ready to welcome thousands of people to the gardens and our vibrant city centre.”
Adrian is looking forward to seeing people enjoying the letters and taking photos and Instas of then sharing them on social media – especially visitors to the city, with Aberdeen’s new cruise ship almost upon us.
“Such social media posts can only help put Aberdeen on the world stage in – dare I say it – big, bold letters,” he said.
“It’s going to be a great summer in the Granite City and the Aberdeen letters will be right at the heart of that.”
Councillor Martin Greig, culture spokesman for Aberdeen City Council, also welcomed the return of the Aberdeen letters.
He said: "The sign is becoming a welcome feature of city life. It is good that the letters can be moved to various locations to increase their use and visibility. They are a great backdrop for photographs and help to raise the profile of the city in a positive way."
