As the colourful brollies of the Umbrella Project are folded away for another year, here’s a look back at the joy and vibrancy this spectacular display brought to Shiprow over the summer months.

The campaign, which celebrates and raises awareness of neurodiversity, was launched in a blaze of song and dance in May, staged by Aberdeen Inspired, who lead the campaign in partnership with the ADHD Foundation.

The Umbrella Project display on Shiprow, which ends this week, is a tribute to the “umbrella” term of neurodiversity, which includes ADHD, autism, Tourette's Syndrome, dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyspraxia.

Adrian Watson, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, said: “The bright brollies on Shiprow have brought a splash of colour to this historic part of Aberdeen throughout the summer and put a smile on so many faces.

“But they have also been a constant reminder that neurodiversity touches all our lives – with one in five people being neurodiverse. The Umbrella Project celebrates the unique contribution those who think differently make to our community and underlines the importance of inclusivity.

“It is always sad to see the umbrellas folded away for winter, but we look forward to seeing them burst back into life again next year.”

As well as the partnership with Aberdeen Inspired and ADHD Foundation, the project has Harbour Energy as headline sponsors and is also supported by TMM Recruitment and CNR International.

In addition to the display on Shiprow, this year Union Square hosted an installation of spirals of the bright umbrellas. Schools and businesses also took part, creating their own mini-installations to celebrate the intelligence and ability of every human being.

And as part of the Umbrella Project, Aberdeen Inspired offers a rich range of resources around ADHD, including a “neurodiversity in the workplace toolkit”. You can find out more by visiting our Umbrella Project 2024 website.
